The case of Debanhi Susana Escobar Bazaldua has shocked Mexico and has generated great controversy due to the multiple inconsistencies and theories that have arisen around her disappearance and death. The 18-year-old girl was reported missing on April 9, 2022, after a photograph went viral in which she was seen standing on the side of the Monterrey–Nuevo Laredo highway. Thirteen days later, his rotting body was found in the cistern of a motel.

From the beginning, the case was full of contradictions and versions that did not add up. The prosecution maintained that Debanhi had fallen into the cistern by accident, but the evidence pointed to the fact that she had actually been raped, murdered and then placed at the scene by two narco-juniors who were friends of the wife of the governor of Nuevo León, Samuel García and in turn business partners of the couple composed of Clara Luz Flores and Abel Guerra (Both former mayors of Escobedo, in fact Abel was then owner of the "Nueva Castilla" motel (place of the events).

In addition to these theories, a TikTok user dedicated to sex work compared the events of Debanhi's disappearance as and interpreted them as part of the daily routines of scorts, which generated a wave of comments blaming the young woman for her own murder. The taxi driver who abandoned her leaked an audio in which a drunk Debanhi was heard repeating "The truth, my parents should know the truth," which increased rumors about her possible involvement in sex work.

Debanhi's adoptive parents, especially his father Mario Escobar, have also been accused of trying to exploit the tragedy financially. Mario requested millions to make a film or series about the case and managed to accommodate a candidacy for deputy for the Movimiento Ciudadano party. Debanhi's tomb was even vandalized shortly after Mario revealed his candidacy, leading some people to speculate that he himself had ordered the destruction to generate outrage and support his candidacy.

Almost two years after her death, the revictimization and sexual exploitation of Debanhi continues, with the circulation of intimate material of the young woman on digital pages and platforms. It has been mentioned that these files were obtained by friends of Debanhi who hacked his Instagram account, although the possibility has also been raised that they are works of artificial intelligence.
